5 minute interview with Simon Carr

The Money Bee decided to interview our Managing Director and Mortgage & Protection specialist - Simon Carr

Tell us a little about yourself?

I'm now in my late 40’s (wow that is scary) happily married with 4 children who are in their late teens and early 20’s. We have a Rhodesian Ridgeback who brings a smile to all our faces every day.

I'm very laid back and enjoy having a laugh. One of my children often smiles and says I’m so immature - I like to think of it, as having a laugh and smiling every day. I like to enjoy life as much as possible.

My reputation precedes me on the dance floor where I am known as Crazy Legs Carr - some call it Dad dancing!

I've worked in financial services for over 25 years.

Tell us about your career?

My career started at a finance brokerage in Wolverhampton called Midland and General which later became Purple Loans and I spent time in most departments, learning the ropes from some amazing teachers (Peter, Terry and Steve - to name a few) and I am really grateful for the opportunity to join the business. Mind you, I had to endure a 6-hour interview. In the end, the MD asked me how much I would like to earn and I said £15,000 - he suggested £7,000 and I agreed (note to self - work on negotiation skills!!!). My first pay packet was £7.60!

Purple Loans was acquired by an american company who eventually sold out to GE Money.

I and two other colleagues acquired part of the business from GE Money and set up Promise Solutions. Some years later we experienced the worst recession in recent history and we were forced to dramatically downsize the business. A horrible time for all my colleagues and me.

I left Promise Solutions and worked for Deutsche Bank and a new challenger bank called Charter Court Financial Services.

Just under 3 years ago I decided to return to brokering and set up The Money Bee.

Why did you set up The Money Bee?

I've owned The Money Bee brand for well over 10 years and deep down always knew I wanted to return to the mortgage and finance broker industry, but wanted to do it differently. I believe The Money Bee portrays a friendly approachable business. We offer a whole of market mortgage service and pride ourselves on being impartial.

Fundamentally, I wanted to strip away the stereotypical grey suited mortgage broker persona. My many years of experience tells me people like to talk to people and equally time is precious with busy lives. I’ve been determined to blend excellent customer service with the latest ways of communicating to make the process as complementary to my customer’s busy schedules.

Our 5-star customer reviews on Google, Facebook, Trustpilot and VouchedFor bare testimony to this.

By the way, we featured in The Times on Saturday - Top Rated adviser 2019 - I am absolutely delighted about this. All our hard work is paying off.

What personal ambitions do you have?

I would love to visit the Kingdom of Cusco in Peru where the Inca civilisation lived - I’d suggest backpacking, but I'm not sure my wife would agree.

Where would you like to travel?

Currently on my list of places to travel to are Croatia, Cyprus, Australia, San Francisco and anywhere with white sand. I love chilling out by the sea.

What do you see as the biggest challenge for people, right now?

In one word - Brexit. It's causing uncertainty and people are nervous about the future. The press seems to be doing a fantastic job of sensationalising the latest to come out from the government. I'm not offering an opinion on “in or out”, but this is a divorce - nobody is going to be entirely happy with the deal.

That said, in the same way, organisations throughout the UK are making plans (mitigating risk of the final outcome), I would suggest and encourage everybody to review their financial arrangements to make sure they have the best deals available.

More of my customers are also taking advantage of our alert service which sends reminders about when mortgage and insurance policies (such as building insurance) are due for renewal. This service is at the very least giving them chance to shop around and make sure their current deal is the most suitable or not.

Final thoughts?

I’d like to thank everybody who has helped spread the word about The Money Bee. I couldn't have done this without you. My final thought is if you haven’t liked our facebook page, then please do so. And please, please share and like all our posts.
